Dream CIV

Earth had been invaded, and humanity was scattered from most of the cities, living in hidden refugee camps. A few smaller cities remained untouched, but these were few and far between. Most of the Earth's larger cities were abandoned ruins.

I was in one of the camps. One day, the people in charge found several large plastic bags around the camp, but it turns out the person responsible for getting rid of the garbage had been derelict in his duty. The bags were surrounded by clouds of flies, and since the flies were soon all over the camp, it was decided we would pack up and move the next day.

That night, I was out in a large field, and I heard several small whistling noises. I looked up into the night sky and saw several grey streaks flit across the stars. A meteor shower, I thought, and I watched the streaks for a few minutes.

Then I noticed that the streaks were getting larger. I thought that I should probably get out of the field and find some kind of shelter, and as I stood to leave, some of the larger meteors collided, creating loud blasts. A few more minutes and the danger seemed to pass, as the shower gradually petered out.

I looked in the direction of one of the nearby cities, and was puzzled by what I saw: dawn seemed to be rising. I thought, it's far too early for dawn, then I saw a horde of frightened people running toward me. A large desk fan sailed through the air and landed right at my feet, and I knew what had happened.

It wasn't dawn. A large meteorite had struck the abandoned city some miles away and exploded, and the people who were hidden there were desperately fleeing the shock wave. I knew the shock wave was on its way, that it would be massive and inescapable.

I turned and ran toward the ruins of another city anyway.
