Dream CCXXI

Earth had been invaded by large, burrowing creatures from Mars.  They were very intelligent and used sound as their primary hunting means.

But as long as people were careful, we could go about our usual lives.  I was in the office, doing routine work along with several colleagues.  I was going into a dark storeroom for supplies when I became aware that one of the Martians was trying to break through the far wall.

I left the storeroom and closed the door, and gathered everyone together and told them what was happening.  I told them that if we all hid and were quiet, it might decide to just go away.

So, we hid under our desks and tried to be as silent as we could.  Inexplicably, someone would go out and gather some paperwork or try to make copies, and people would shush them.

Even more inexplicably, several children had been brought into the office, and efforts to quiet them were less and less successful as time went on.  One little girl insisted on rolling a ball full of pebbles or something.

Just then, the door to the stockroom slowly eased open.  The little girl giggled and rolled her ball over to where I was hiding.  Thinking that if the Martian got her, he might be satisfied with the little girl, I rolled the ball as hard as I could toward the stockroom door.  (This was not one of my finest moments.)

After a few minutes, nothing further happened.  People started coming out from hiding and chatting among themselves.

I tried to motion everyone to keep quiet.  "Has anyone actually looked in the storeroom?"
