Dream CXVI

I was visiting my son in college.  He was attending a large university in a somewhat mountainous region.

I met some of his professors, and they decided they liked me because I participated in a game wherein nonsense phrases were shouted with conviction, and I was able to do so very rapidly.

They led me through some corridors to my room.  My son told me about his pet cat, and I found the cat and started playing with him.  I asked if the cat hated being picked up, and my son said, "Completely," and picked him up and put him on my chest.  I picked up my own cat and placed her next to the new cat.  They looked bainfully at each other for a few moments, then slinked off to be alone.

The next morning, my son, my wife and his head professor all met me and led me to the hall where we ate breakfast.  My wife good-naturedly kidded my son about a girl.

After breakfast, I decided to drive into the town.  Once there, I stopped off at a veternary office where I knew some folks.  I was surprised to see my son's girlfriend there, though I knew her mother worked there.  Her name was Lena, and her daughter's name was Ola.  They were both of Korean descent, and everytime I saw the Ola, I was reminded of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Deep Rising, as she reseambled the young Asian woman in that film.

There was a brief discussion about whether chickens were pets, and then the head professor dropped by and talked to my son's girlfriend.  It seemed there was another game planned at the college, this one having to do with magic.

The professor was going to have the girlfriend disappear on stage, and they wanted to rehearse the trick.  It involved her nude body dropping down in front of a mirror, and the professor then dragging her out of view.  They wanted to do a rehearsal and asked if I would mind videotaping it.  I said I'd be glad to help, and when the time came for the rehearsal, I went into a room with a bed and waited, camera at the ready.

The signal was given, and the professor dragged my son's girlfriend's body below the threshhold of view.  However, to my horror, once he passed into the doorway, her head separated itself from her body.  She had time to shout "Hans, no, I don't want to die!" before she was dead.

Hans didn't notice until I started yelling.   He turned and saw, and started to head back to me but I warned him back.  I explaned that her head simply detached from her body as if a thin, invisible blade were in the air.  I reached behind me on the bed and grabbed a magazine and started waving it through the air where she had gone through the doorway.

The magazine began to disintegrate as it passed through small "holes" in the air.  As bits of paper accumlated in the "holes," they took shape.  At first they appeared as small, confetti-like sizes, but then I began to uncover a much larger, rectangular area.

I knew at once that this meant some malevolent force was trying to use these "holes" as a way to murder people.  I yelled to Hans to contact some scientists at the university to try and figure out how to stop this phenomenon.

As I yelled, I felt a strip of the disintegrating matterial pass over my head, then down around me, as if trying to slice me in several places.  I crouched and tried to make myself smaller and held my breath, not wanting to die so horribly.

But I didn't die.  I was able to grasp the edge of the material, and pull it together, like gathering sheets of newspaper, and I started to crush the strips into a ball.

I was suddenly filled with rage at these people who could so casually murder people.  As I gathered more and more of the material, I was thinking, Die, die all of you.

With that, the material disappeared from my hands.  The "holes" that had floated in the air were also gone.  And I knew that by gathering the material with such rage, I had destroyed the entire universe of the attackers.

The threat from them was gone forever.  But that wouldn't help Ola.  She was dead, and I knew my son would be grief-stricken when I told him.
