Dream CLXXIII

I was in college, and when I moved into my dorm room, I was surprised that my assigned roommate was Cameron Diaz.  I thought at first that there was a mistake in the assignment, but we checked the printouts and we were supposed to share the same dorm room.  So we decided, "Why not?"  She was very nice and amiable, and we quickly became very good friends.  We got along really well--we laughed at the same things, and had very similar tastes in entertainment.

We both knew that people would disapprove of this, but since nothing sexual ever happened between us, we figured we'd be okay.

However, we were soon aware that people were whispering, that rumors were floating around, and so in order to save her reputation, we looked to find different arrangements.  Cameron giggled.  "You'll have to share the rent with other boys," she whispered.

We began looking through the various "Roommate wanted" listings and selected a few folks for interviews.

We looked at a map of the campus, and I mistakenly read one of the rooms, "McGruder Hall" as "Murder One."

We both laughed over that.  There was a room right next to it on the map called "Louge," and we joked that we must make certain that we chose "Louge" rather than "Murder One."  It was only half a joke, since the campus was known to be quite dangerous.

Cameron set up a few interviews with me, "to find suitable boys for you" and I listened to them talk.

But I kept seeing Cameron's smile all through the interviews.  And I knew I'd miss her a tremendous amount.

Eventually, someone moved in, and Cameron was gone.

As I said, she and I never made love together; we never needed to, we were so close.  When she left, college became just another place.  I always looked back on those days with regret.

Even now, I can remember her smile.  It's a beautiful smile.
