Dream CXXXV

Earth had recently been destroyed by a massive cosmic storm, and the remnants of humanity had fled to another planet for safety.  Unfortunately, the storm followed us, and the new planet began to be ravaged as well.

Under the leadership of a dwarf named Hark, humanity began to build structures designed to weather the destruction.  Unfortunately, Hark assumed more and more power, and began to act as a tyrant.

He refused to help unless the women and children were sequestered in a huge dome-like structure situated across a narrow bridge.  He told us that he was the only one who could have access to them from now on.  We were still allowed to enter the dome to perform maintenance tasks, and while over there I struck up a friendship with two young blonde women.  We had to be careful to keep this secret from Hark, however, since he was prone to jealous rages.

Hark then proposed a plan whereby he would use his mental energy to combat the power of the storm.  We designed a mental amplification harness that he would be plugged into.  Once he was fastened within the machine, he began to laugh maniacally, saying that he had tricked us, and now he would have total control over the entire planet.

Unfortunately for him, he had overestimated his own abilities, and the harness simply gave off a weak light.  The chief scientist who had designed the harness determined to execute the now helpless Hark, and raised a gun to shoot him, but at the last moment decided he couldn't do it.

I grabbed the discarded gun and told everyone we had to do this, or Hark's influence could never be cast off.  I pressed the gun against the side of his head and as I did so, the gun barrel began to glow softly.  Hark's eye lit up as well, showing an on-off switch, meaning he had been a machine the entire time.  I pressed the trigger.

Outside, the storm was still raging and I determined that I wanted to spend my last moments with my female friends.  I crossed the narrow bridge and made my way inside.

As we all huddled together, shouts began to come from outside.  It seemed that with Hark's destruction, the winds started to die down, and soon the entire atmosphere was calm and clear.  Humanity had been spared.

As we all prepared to leave the dome and begin rebuilding, I noticed that the chief scientist and I were notably taller than everyone else--Earth's refugees were almost entirely midgets.  The scientist and I noted that, from now on, we'd have to prepare ourselves to be the butt of countless "How's the weather up there?" and too-tall-for-doorways jokes.

We laughed, and as I put my arms around my blonde friends, we made our way outside into the sunshine.
